We began today with getting to know the STEMmersion and the people participating. We went over the expectations as well as the rules and fieldtrips that will be happening over the next two and a half weeks. We got to know each other through a game called “The Wind Blows.” Each student, except for one, was given a polly spot; we gathered in a circle and the one without a spot stood in the middle. They had to, first; state their name, second; say, “The wind blows” and something that was true to themselves. An example is “the wind blows to anyone who has a dog.” Everyone who could relate to the sentence then had to run to another polly spot; one person would always be in the middle.

Once we came in from lunch and recess, we read a reading by Henry David Thoreau about a model for nature writing; it helped give us a sense of how and what to write about in nature. After the reading, we went outside to the pond next to the school, separated by a stream. We were given a paper called “Two by Two in Nature,” where we were to write what we felt, saw, and heard during ten minutes of silence. We then found someone who had something in common with what we either felt, saw, or heard and wrote his or her name down next to that thing. We also found two people we didn’t have something in common with; they wrote down what they felt/saw/heard, along with their name next to it. The time we spent outside was very calming and reflective for me; I listened and observed my surroundings.
